The Israeli company Lensy Medical is working on a new solution for the production of individual contact lenses using 3D printing. The technology should enable opticians to produce personalized contact lenses directly in the practice within a few minutes.
The approach addresses a well-known problem: around 20 percent of contact lens wearers give up every year because standardized lenses do not fit perfectly. With 150 million users worldwide, this means there is a huge demand for better solutions.
The company, founded in Rehovot in 2021, relies on a modular 3D printer with DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology. The system cures a special plastic layer by layer using light projection. This method promises a precise and material-efficient manufacturing process.
CEO Edan Kenig plans to launch the technology on the market within the next four years. In addition to correcting defective vision, the company is also working on lenses for myopia control in children and drug-releasing contact lenses.
Lensy Medical also stands out with its business model. Unlike competitors who rely on mass production, the company wants to give eye doctors the opportunity to manufacture lenses directly on site. The contact lens market is expected to grow to over 14 billion dollars by 2026.
