Kalico: New name for 3D printer firmware Klipper-Fork “Danger-Klipper”

The popular 3D printer firmware Klipper has received a new fork called Kalico. Previously known as “Danger-Klipper”, the project aims to give ambitious hobbyists more freedom to customize and optimize their printers. The former name was changed to avoid misunderstandings about the project’s objective.

Kalico is thematically based on the pirate “Calico Jack”. This is also reflected in the new logo in the form of a Calico-spotted pirate cat. These visual and naming changes mark the main difference to the previous version, while the functionality of the firmware remains largely the same. The documentation has been adapted to the new brand and the software is available under a new domain.

The firmware is primarily aimed at experienced users who want to push their devices to their limits. These include experimental and less restrictive configurations that offer experienced users extended customization options. However, it is clearly pointed out that Kalico is not a beginner-friendly firmware. Users should be prepared to take risks and occasionally encounter problems.

Like the original Klipper firmware, Kalico runs on a wide range of printer models, but favors use on Raspberry Pi platforms (models 2, 3 and 4). Compatibility with common web interfaces such as Fluidd and OctoPrint is fully maintained, making it a flexible option for building customized 3D printers.
