The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) is building a new cooperation network across Asia, with additive manufacturing at its core. Through closer collaboration with Jilin University in China and new agreements in Vietnam, the institute aims to more closely link research on metal and bio 3D printing, precision manufacturing and biomimetic technologies and transfer it into industrial applications.

On November 17, KIMM President Seog-Hyeon Ryu and representatives of Jilin University in Changchun signed a new agreement that expands an existing partnership dating back to 2019. In addition to the previous focus on 3D printing and biomimetic approaches, the cooperation will now also cover 3D printing-based bio- and medical technology, precise manufacturing processes, electronics production, and functional surfaces with superhydrophobic, anti-icing or corrosion-resistant properties. Since 2022, the joint project “Development of Biomimetic Implants Using 3D Printing Design and Process Technology” has been running, investigating implants using additive manufacturing and bionic structures.

President Seog-Hyeon Ryu of KIMM stated, “Through global collaboration with leading universities in science and technology in China and Vietnam, KIMM has established a foundation to broaden technological cooperation across Asia and strengthen research linkages between nations. As the machinery industry continues to play an increasingly vital role in the industrial development of both countries, KIMM will strive to produce tangible outcomes in joint research, technology transfer, and talent cultivation, positioning itself as a leading research institute driving mechanical innovation and industrial advancement in Asia.”

In parallel, KIMM is preparing to build a broader industry–university–research network in Vietnam. At the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, a four-party memorandum of understanding is to be signed between HUST, the University of Science and Technology (UST), and the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH). The agreement is linked to the “KIMM-STARSHIP” program, through which KIMM aims to attract international researchers and establish qualification paths such as a dedicated admission track for the UST-KIMM School in Hanoi starting in the fall semester of 2026.

In addition, KIMM is exploring joint activities with the Vietnam Metrology Institute, the National Barcode Center and other universities on measurement and certification topics, for example on reliability assessment of mechanical components.

For 3D printing, this primarily means new platforms for joint projects, technology transfer and education, intended to bring additive manufacturing closer to regulated applications and near-series production in the region.
