Korean Ministry of Trade to Spend $20M to 3D Print Ships

South Korea has already developed a row of different interesting 3D printers and technologies. Now the ministry of trade wants to spend a lot of money to research technologies to 3D print ships.

The South Korean ministry of trade and energy invests 20 Million Dollar into 3D printing. They want to start 2017 and use the budget with a five year plan in mind (2017 – 2022). The money will be used to determine which 3D printing technologies could be used for creating ships and offshore equipment. The research will take place in Ulsan, the seventh biggest city in Korea.

1.1 million people live in Ulsan, a city with a huge industrial centre. The biggest automotive factory and the largest facility for building ships have settled down there. And of corse, there is the second biggest oil refinery. In 2014, Ulsan had a GDP per capita (PPP) of $73,396, the highest in the country and higher than some of richest countries in the world.

There were no detailed plans announced yet but this is the highest investment into 3D printing for the maritime industry until now.
