Maker releases free model files for mechanical mini-fan from the 3D printer

With the Squeeze Powered Flywheel Fan, maker MrHegger presents a fully 3D printable system on the Printables portal that is mechanically driven and requires no electronics. The compact fan uses a rack and pinion mechanism that is pulled back to its starting position by a rubber band after each squeeze. Squeezing the rack repeatedly sets a flywheel in motion that keeps the fan turning even after it is released.

The functional principle is based on a simple but effective design. A rack drives the flywheel via a pinion, which in turn is connected to the fan. A rubber band ensures that the rack moves back automatically after each press without interrupting the rotation. A freewheel mechanism separates the drive gear from the flywheel as soon as there is no more torque – so the movement is maintained.

The individual parts can be assembled without glue. For print preparation, the developer recommends a shaft with 100% infill, as this can otherwise break due to the load and its print orientation. In addition to the printed components, two M3 screws (10-18 mm long) and a rubber band are required. The fan is attached via a screw thread, which makes it easy to replace the rotor blades. A STEP file of the rotor stroke is available for customization.

The original model was printed in ABS, which is particularly suitable for this application due to its smooth surface. Alternatively, PLA or PETG can also be used.
