Manyfold is a decentralized platform for the storage and exchange of 3D models. The portal has now successfully completed another financing round. The aim of the project is to give users complete control over their content instead of leaving it to centralized platforms. The concept is for models to be stored across a network of nodes. For users, however, this appears to be a unified repository that is accessible everywhere.
The recently received funding from the NLNet and NGI Zero Common Fund will finance the project until 2025. This support will allow Manyfold to develop key functions and new features that will expand the scope of use. The planned improvements include direct integration with slicing software in order to be able to print 3D models without detours, as well as the ability to synchronize external platforms such as Thingiverse or Printables. An extended API is also being developed to facilitate customization to specific needs.
Manyfold also offers a new approach to how digital content can be provided and managed. Automated processes for optimizing 3D models will not only save storage space, but also make it easier for end users to use. The company is also looking into how creators can monetize their content, for example by integrating payment options.
The project is currently still at an early stage, but has the potential to fundamentally change the way 3D models are shared and used. It represents an alternative to the dominant centralized platforms and could be of particular interest to creative minds who value data sovereignty and flexibility. Whether this decentralized model can establish itself on the market remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Manyfold offers an exciting insight into the future of 3D model management.
