Message in a 3D Printed Cake – Student Creates Paste Extruder to 3D Print Custom Cake Designs

German industrial design student Daniel Wilkens has developed a special paste extruder to 3D print custom cake designs. Each slice of the 3D printed marble cake features a different image or word and can therefore tell you a story.

Daniel showcased his cake 3D printer at the IMM Cologne trade fair in Germany that took place last week. He explained that once the idea was born, he spent several months on building the extruder and the machine, along with developing the corresponding software. Key to his 3D printer, however, was the creation of a dough that can actually be 3D printed and, most importantly, tastes good.
