Metamorphic AM sees function-driven design as the key to successful 3D printing

The British design and engineering consultancy Metamorphic AM has redesigned its website and is using the relaunch to articulate its position in the additive manufacturing landscape more clearly. At the core is the thesis that 3D printing does not become successful primarily through automation and software features, but through a deep understanding of function, material, and geometry.

Since its founding, Metamorphic AM has worked on complex development projects in areas such as quantum technology, fusion energy, medical technology, and wearables. According to the company, the team has been responsible for research and development programs totaling more than eight million pounds since 2021. What is new is less the technical focus and more the lower barrier to entry for external development teams, which are intended to benefit from DfAM expertise earlier in the process.

“Our new website is about clarity,” says Laurence Coles, Co-Founder of Metamorphic AM. “There’s a lot of noise in DfAM right now, software promises, automated optimisation, ‘one-click’ solutions. We wanted to clearly state what we believe, that real performance comes from understanding function first, then building geometry to serve it.”

This mindset is reflected in the expanded offering of the Rapid Geometry Review, which enables early evaluation of printability, structural performance, and manufacturing-oriented design.

“Historically, we’ve been brought in when problems were already very complex,” explained Manolis Papastavrou, Co-Founder. “What we’re doing now is opening the door earlier, helping teams avoid dead ends before they’ve invested time and money in the wrong geometry. It’s about smarter decisions, sooner.”

“Tools matter.” added Papastavrou, “Of course, we use them, but they don’t replace engineering judgement. Our work has always been about using computation to amplify insight, and expand geometric freedom, not automate thinking.”

With its new presence, Metamorphic AM positions itself more strongly as a strategic partner for additive manufacturing. 3D printing is not viewed as an isolated production step, but as an integrated part of a development process in which design decisions play a decisive role in determining function, economic viability, and reliability.
