Micro injection molding for medical technology: Accumold showcases new manufacturing capabilities at MD&M East

The US manufacturer Accumold will be presenting new developments in the field of micro injection molding at the MD&M East medical technology trade fair in New York City from May 20 to 22, 2025. The company specializes in the production of extremely small and complex plastic components that cannot be manufactured using conventional processes, or only at great expense. The focus is on applications in medical technology, micro sensors and micro optics.

A central topic at the Accumold stand (Booth 551) is the further development of the injection molding process for thin-walled cannulas. These components, which were previously usually manufactured using extrusion and downstream processing steps, can now be produced in a single injection molding process. Wall thicknesses of just 0.1 millimeters can be achieved.

“Our presence at MD&M East reflects our commitment to supporting the rapid evolution of the medical device industry,” says Brett Saddoris, Technical Sales Manager at Accumold. “We thrive on helping engineers and designers turn bold ideas into manufacturable realities — whether they’re prototyping disruptive technologies or ramping up to high-volume production.”

Production takes place in a fully integrated production environment at the company’s site in Ankeny, Iowa. Tool design, clean room production in accordance with ISO 13485, automated assembly and metrological quality assurance are closely interlinked there. This structure enables rapid scaling from development to series production, especially for demanding medical applications such as wearables, injection systems or surgical instruments.

“The ability to reliably mold cannulas with wall thicknesses as low as 0.004 inches represents a significant leap forward in medical manufacturing,” Saddoris explains. “This process reduces part variability, increases production efficiency, and opens up exciting new design possibilities for minimally invasive medical devices.”

In addition to manufacturing expertise, Accumold offers expertise in working with medically approved materials such as PEEK, LCP or Pebax, which are biocompatible and suitable for complex geometries. The combination of precise tooling technology, materials expertise and automated manufacturing makes the company a partner for developers who need miniaturized, reliable components for the next generation of medical devices.
