The Missouri 3D Printing Center for Precision Health opened at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) on May 9, 2025. The new center will serve as a platform for research, teaching and technological development in the field of personalized healthcare. The project was made possible by funding from the “Science to Jobs” program of the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development.

Modern additive manufacturing technologies are used to produce individual medical applications such as patient-specific implants, orthopaedic aids or models for surgical planning. The center is currently housed in the Ummel Technology Building, with a move to the planned Roy Blunt Health Science Innovation Center planned for 2026.

In addition to technological development, the focus is also on training qualified specialists. Through close cooperation with regional industrial partners and medical institutions, the center is expected to provide impetus for economic and scientific development in the region.

“The Missouri 3D Printing Center for Precision Health brings new opportunities spanning healthcare, education, research, and industry,” said Dr. Crystal Lemmons, dean of the College of Health, Life Sciences and Education. “The potential impact of this technology is boundless, and we expect the center to grow and evolve over time.”

For MSSU, the center marks a strategic step towards strengthening practice-oriented study programs and regional innovation networks. The integration of 3D printing into medical fields of application opens up new possibilities, particularly with regard to individualized therapies and cost-efficient manufacturing processes in healthcare.
