A designer has teamed up with Maker’s Supply to develop a modular camera rig for smartphones that can be manufactured entirely using a 3D printer. The system, called MOCA, was born out of the need to create a lighter and more flexible alternative to standard smartphone mounts. Instead of relying on heavy, expensive metal solutions, MOCA combines 3D-printed parts with readily available standard components – now also available as a complete kit.
The MOCA rig is based on a customizable design that is compatible with popular smartphones. The clamping mechanism uses simple rubber bands to provide a flexible yet secure mount. Standardized interfaces such as cold shoe mounts, NATO rails and ARCA Swiss-compatible plates have been integrated for accessories such as microphones or lights. This means that MOCA remains compatible with existing equipment.
The combination of different standards in the design process was a challenge. In the photographic sector, manufacturers mainly rely on inch threads such as 1/4-20, while developers in CAD programs usually work with metric dimensions. In order to maintain compatibility with existing tripods and accessories, the MOCA team therefore took both systems into account.
The biggest obstacle for many users to date has been the procurement of the necessary hardware – from screws and magnets to rubber bands. These components are often only available individually and from different sources. The collaboration with Maker’s Supply has now made it possible to put together a complete hardware kit. The parts list was coordinated, test samples were exchanged and spare parts were taken into account to facilitate assembly.
The STL files are freely accessible via the MakerWorld platform, while the matching hardware kit can be ordered directly from Maker’s Supply.
