The founder of SiMa Sidecar Manufaktur, Marco Ederer, has been developing and researching his 3D-printed sidecar for four years. No original GRP mold, full flexibility in the technical design and in the design, replacement of individual components in the event of damage. This and many other points were the decisive factor for Marco in the further development of his first prototype. In 2023, he presented his “Aurora Roadster” at the Euro Gespann Treffen in Luxembourg and took part in the European 3D Printing Challenge. What has happened since then and where will the journey take him?
After a year of construction, Marco and his wife proudly reached their destination, driving the 800 km to Luxembourg on their own wheels. The reward for their efforts was first place in the self-build competition and the realization of how much potential the idea had.
An important step was the further development of the modular construction method. The individual parts of the “Aurora” were welded together, which turned out to be very time-consuming. Added to this was the look, which did not go down well with everyone.
The company 3dk.berlin was on board right from the start. They produced a filament especially for Marco’s project according to the desired specifications and color. This was the only way it was even possible to start such a large project. In 2024, the filament manufacturer asked if Marco could create a trade fair project for Formnext. A new joining process was already in the starting blocks and so the ICON was created in the colors of the company logo. The project was rounded off by the company Diamant Polymer. Their coating, specially produced for 3D-printed surfaces, significantly improved the UV and weather resistance.
Marco is currently working on a new printer that will make small series production possible. A sidecar will then consist of only three or four individual components, depending on whether a door is installed or not. A modular system is also planned, allowing interested parties to choose between three front, two middle and two rear parts. The first “modular sidecars” should be on display live at the upcoming Formnext at the latest.
If you would like to support Marco in his further work or even purchase one of the four different sidecars, you can do so here SidePlast. There is also more information on the history of the development and insights into the production of the sidecars here.
