New ASTM certification program aims to improve quality assurance in 3D printing

As part of its role as Knowledge Partner and sponsor of the TCT 3Sixty trade fair, ASTM International has presented a new certification program for manufacturers in the field of additive manufacturing (AM). The aim of the program is to improve quality assurance, regulatory compliance and process control specifically for 3D printing – aspects that have so far been insufficiently covered by traditional quality management standards such as ISO 9001 or AS9100.

The program was developed by the Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) in collaboration with the Additive Manufacturing Certification Committee (AMCC). Over 25 companies were involved, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Ford and Stryker. The focus is on the specific requirements, risks and material properties associated with additive manufacturing processes. The audit criteria are based on internationally established standards such as ISO/ASTM 52901, 52904 and 52920.

“By aligning end-user requirements and providing third-party assurance, this initiative helps unlock the full potential of AM in high-performance applications,” said Dr. Martin White, director of technical operations for ASTM International. “This program closes a critical gap in qualifying manufacturers that need to meet industry and regulatory demands.”

In addition to manufacturer certification, ASTM already offers programs for the certification of AM parts, processes and personnel as well as for operational safety in AM plants. The new offer is intended to help OEMs and suppliers in particular to avoid unnecessary audits, increase transparency and accelerate the market launch of AM-based products.

Interested companies can start the certification process via the AM CoE website. ASTM will also be represented at TCT 3Sixty with its own contacts, including at the UK AM User Group and the TCT Awards ceremony.
