New TPU filament from Ecogenesis Biopolymers relies on plant-based raw materials

Ecogenesis Biopolymers has introduced genTPU, a new thermoplastic polyurethane filament designed for fused deposition modeling. The material is available in a diameter of 1.75 millimeters and covers two degrees of hardness: 95A and 60D. The manufacturer uses Soleic TPU from Algenesis Labs as the base polymer. According to the company, production takes place entirely in the USA.

Ecogenesis classifies genTPU as an alternative to conventional petroleum-based polyurethanes. Mechanical strength and flexibility are said to match what users expect from classic TPU materials. At the same time, the company points to a significantly lower environmental impact. Soleic TPU comes from renewable plant sources and is certified by the US Department of Agriculture’s BioPreferred program.

A key point is the degradability of the raw material. Ecogenesis describes Soleic TPU as the first fully biodegradable, flexible TPU filament for 3D printing. In terms of climate impact, the company cites a reduction in the carbon footprint of 77.8 to 83.8 percent compared to petroleum-based variants. In addition, Ecogenesis conducts laboratory tests based on a modified ASTM D5338 composting standard. Under CO₂ respirometry, 27 percent biodegradation was measured at 45 degrees Celsius over 180 days.

Ecogenesis also emphasizes that its own TPU materials are designed to decompose completely in nature, including in oceans, at the end of their life cycle without leaving behind small plastic residues. During use, the filament is supposed to retain its mechanical integrity and only degrade at the end of its life.

At launch, genTPU is available in four colors: natural (transparent), black, gray, and white. The filament is already available in the US. Ecogenesis expects sales to start in Europe by summer 2026. A planned distribution partnership is to be announced in the first quarter of 2026.
