The British company Open Bionics impressively demonstrates how 3D printing technology can help not only in industry, but also in everyday life. In collaboration with Disney, the company has developed a custom-made cover for its “Hero Arm” – a 3D-printed bionic prosthesis. The latest collaboration celebrates the release of Moana 2 and includes personalized designs that will delight fans of the film series.
The Hero Arm, developed by Open Bionics for people with limb differences, combines lightweight materials with a modular design. Additive manufacturing makes it possible to implement individual adaptations that improve both the functionality and the aesthetic design of the prosthesis.
The technology behind the Hero Arm is based on EMG sensors that detect muscle movements and thus enable precise movements. The 3D printing technology not only enables cost-efficient production, but also allows the prosthesis to be quickly adapted to the wearer’s individual needs. The four girls show their enthusiasm not only about the design of the cover. For example, 11-year-old Dalilah from Denver, Colorado, who was the first to receive her surprise, said: “This was an incredible surprise. I’m a huge Moana fan. I named my dog Moana and I use my Hero Arm to take her for walks. It’s so cool that my bionic arm now matches my favourite movie. I cannot wait to wear this to school tomorrow.”
Open Bionics’ CEO Samantha Payne said: “We heard Dalilah was a huge Moana fan and she has done so much since she was little to raise awareness for the limb different community we couldn’t wait to plan a Disney magic moment for her.”
