The developers of the open source slicer OrcaSlicer have decided not to support Bambu Connect. This is in response to a controversial change on the part of Bambu Lab, which provides for greater integration into the company’s own ecosystem. The decision has a direct impact on users of Bambu 3D printers who rely on alternative slicing software.
According to a statement from SoftFever, the main developer of OrcaSlicer, the proposed integration of Bambu Connect does not bring any real added value for users. Rather, the approach would merely launch a separate application without providing direct access to printer functions. As a result, the workflow would remain restricted and central functions could not be meaningfully integrated.
OrcaSlicer calls on Bambu Lab to reconsider its current policy. The developers are particularly critical of the fact that users cannot fully decide how their self-purchased hardware is used. They are calling for an open API and official support for third-party slicers.
For the time being, the OrcaSlicer team strongly advises users of Bambu 3D printers not to update the firmware. Instead, it is recommended to operate the printers in LAN mode to avoid unwanted changes due to online updates.
