The Czech 3D printing manufacturer Prusa Research has introduced “EasyPrint”, a cloud-based slicer that runs directly in the browser without installation. The software is particularly aimed at beginners and users who want to print their 3D models easily and independently of their device.
Until now, the use of a 3D printer required locally installed slicer software, such as PrusaSlicer or Cura. These programs convert 3D models into printable G-code. EasyPrint does away with local installation and instead offers slicing directly in the browser. Users can thus prepare and start print jobs from smartphones, tablets or inexpensive notebooks.
The EasyPrint concept deliberately provides for a reduced user interface. Models can be imported from the “Printables” platform or directly from local storage. The user then simply selects basic parameters such as quality, infill or support structures. Advanced functions, such as more complex profile settings, are reserved for PrusaSlicer. The device profiles are automatically recognized if the printers are linked to the PrusaConnect service.
Technically, EasyPrint is based on Prusa’s existing slicer software. The actual calculation of the G-code takes place on Prusa’s servers, with users receiving 40 minutes of free slicing time per month. Of particular interest is the ability to add printers without an active internet connection (“offline printers”). In this case, the finished G-code file is downloaded and transferred to the printer via USB stick.
At the moment, use is via an invitation system with which Prusa wants to control server utilization. Users receive a limited amount of free slicing time every day. However, larger, complex models are currently excluded from browser slicing. It is not yet clear whether EasyPrint will remain permanently free of charge. Prusa would first like to gain experience of the server load and then decide whether there will be a paid premium version. Users who already want to test the tool can register for an invitation on the Prusa website.
