Prusa Research, known for its 3D printers, is expanding its material portfolio with a high-performance filament. The new Prusament PEI 1010 is aimed at industrial applications and promises exceptional properties.
PEI (polyetherimide) belongs to the class of high-performance plastics and is already used in the automotive and aerospace industries. The new filament requires special printing conditions: a nozzle temperature of 420 °C and a heating chamber of at least 90 °C. These requirements make it compatible with the recently introduced Prusa Pro HT90 3D printer.
The mechanical properties of PEI 1010 are impressive. With a tensile strength similar to that of aluminium, it is suitable for the direct replacement of certain metal parts in selected aerospace applications. The material is characterised by high chemical and thermal resistance. It can withstand temperatures of around 200 °C and is resistant to most chemicals.
In addition to industrial applications, PEI 1010 is also suitable for scientific and medical purposes. It can undergo various sterilisation processes, including autoclaving and gamma irradiation.
The filament is currently only available in its natural, transparent amber colour. With a price of EUR 149 (incl. VAT) per 500 g spool, Prusa is clearly positioning the material in the high-end segment.
Despite its high performance, PEI 1010 is not a ‘plug-and-print’ material. It requires careful handling, especially with regard to drying. Prusa has introduced specially developed, heat-resistant spools made from PA11CF waste from its extrusion lines, which also reduces production waste.
With the introduction of Prusament PEI 1010, Prusa Research is expanding its range with a material that opens up new possibilities for industrial and highly specialised 3D printing applications.
