Prusa releases CORE-One CAD files under new Open Community License

Original Prusa 3D Printers is making the complete CAD files for the CORE One and CORE One L frames freely available. This includes STEP files and assemblies for Fusion. The data can be integrated into CAD workflows, for example for modifications, accessories, or planning workshop layouts.

The choice of license is striking: instead of GNU GPL or Creative Commons, Prusa uses the new Open Community License (OCL). It is intended to close gaps that arise when transferring classic software licenses to hardware designs. According to the company, the OCL is deliberately kept short and contains practical examples to clarify what is and is not permitted.

The OCL allows downloading, testing, and further learning based on the complete CAD data. Modifications may be created and shared under the same license. Use in your own workshop, print farm, or production line is also covered, as is the manufacture of spare parts to keep machines functional in private or commercial environments. However, the sale of complete machines or remixes based on these files remains prohibited unless a separate agreement has been made with Prusa.

Prusa emphasizes that the license only applies to the downloaded intellectual property, not to purchased hardware. A purchased CORE One remains freely transferable and modifiable. The company cites an explicit patent license, rules against AI data mining, and a codified right to repair as protective mechanisms. At the same time, Prusa acknowledges that licenses do not guarantee enforcement in every jurisdiction.
