Czech 3D printer manufacturer Prusa Research has provided initial insights into a possible multicolor extension for the CORE One. The company, which is known for its transparent communication, is thus hinting at where developments in the field of multicolor printing could be heading.
The CORE One has quickly become Prusa Research’s central product. This is hardly surprising, as many competitors, above all Bambu Lab, also focus on CoreXY systems. Now Prusa has teased a new MMU system for multi-color printing.
Previous multi-material units (MMU) from Prusa, such as the MMU2S, required a lot of space, as the filament rolls had to be placed next to each other. This design often made handling cumbersome and created unused spaces in which dust and filament residues could collect. In the update, Prusa Research now showed a new MMU design that is reminiscent of bamboo AMS. It has five bobbins instead of four, an integrated filament buffer and a pull-out unit for easier maintenance. However, the company emphasized that this is an early prototype.
The decision to make the MMU system more compact and accessible is based on user feedback. This shows that the industry is increasingly moving towards a unified concept for multicolor printing systems.
