Prusament Resin Cleaner DPM: Prusa introduces new washing cleaner as an IPA alternative for SLA post-processing

Original Prusa is introducing a new cleaning agent for SLA printed parts called “Prusament Resin Cleaner DPM.” The manufacturer states that it is based on dipropylene glycol methyl ether (DPM), an organic solvent. The focus is on greater safety during handling and shipping. Although isopropyl alcohol (IPA) remains widely used and is considered effective, Prusa says it poses significant risks when used in large quantities.

Prusa cites several reasons for the change. DPM is significantly less flammable than IPA, partly due to its higher ignition temperature. In addition, the agent is less volatile. This means that fewer volatile organic compounds are released into the air, and it also evaporates more slowly when a container is open. Prusa cites another point, namely that IPA can form peroxides under certain conditions. These can accumulate during long-term storage and through exposure to air, heat, or light. The manufacturer describes clear crystals in the container as a warning sign. In this case, the canister should no longer be moved; instead, local authorities should be contacted for safe disposal. Prusa also rates the toxicity as lower and points out that DPM does not require hazardous substance pictograms like IPA.

Prusa provides specific information on service life based on internal tests with the CW1S and Prusament Resin. According to these tests, 2 liters of DPM cleaner reliably cleaned for several cycles until about 100 milliliters of liquid resin residue was absorbed. After that, the cleaning performance gradually decreased.

The process is similar to washing in IPA. Prusa specifies washing times of 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the complexity of the model. The first wash cycle is followed by a water bath, optionally with detergent. Drying can be assisted with compressed air, after which the part dries in the CW1S before curing.

Prusa sells the cleaner in 1- and 5-liter canisters. Prices start at €16.99 (including VAT) per liter and €64.99 for 5 liters. Prusa cites worldwide shipping as an advantage, which was not offered for IPA due to its high flammability. Regardless of the cleaner used, the manufacturer continues to recommend protective gloves and goggles. Materials contaminated with liquid resin, including cleaner and rinse water, are considered toxic waste and should be disposed of accordingly.
