Researchers Develop New 3D Printing Photopolymers with Enhanced Properties

Researchers at the Vienna University of Technology have developed enhanced liquid photopolymers for use in SLA 3D printing, that outperform products currently available on the market.

The team led by Professor Jürgen Stampfl from the Institute of Materials Science and Technology collaborated with Professor Liska from the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry to explore and change the physical interaction mechanisms of single polymer chains. Although still in the early stages of research, the newly developed materials already outperform other available photopolymers with regards to strength and heat resistance.

“Using current 3D printing processes, you can either achieve good surface quality and geometrical precision or produce objects with good material properties. Both at the same time is hardly possible; that’s the dilemma of 3d printing”, Stampfl explains.

The recently founded startup Cubicure GmbH will further develop the new materials and plans to launch the product in 2017. Further members of the research team, that also won the Science-to-Business Award for their project, are Robert Gmeiner from TU Vienna as well as Johannes Homa, founder of TU Vienna spin-off Lithoz focused on additive manufacturing of high-performance ceramics using the proprietary Lithography-based Ceramic Manufacturing (LCM) technology.
