Aerospace company Rocket Lab has signed a memorandum of understanding with Nikon SLM Solutions to reserve two units of a new large-format metal 3D printing system currently in development. The platform is expected to manufacture significantly larger components at higher throughput than existing systems. The aim is to further expand the use of additive manufacturing for space applications and scale up production capabilities.

Rocket Lab already employs additive manufacturing in the production of engine components. The planned systems from Nikon SLM Solutions are intended to extend this capacity and enable the production of complex large-scale structures in a single build. Engineers will benefit from greater design freedom, including functional integration and weight optimization, while reducing part counts. Additive manufacturing can thus help shorten assembly times and enhance system reliability.

“We are proud to deepen our collaboration with Rocket Lab as they continue to pioneer scalable, high-performance AM for space,” said Sam O’Leary, CEO of Nikon SLM Solutions. “Their decision to reserve our forthcoming ultra-large platform underscores a shared belief in pushing the limits of innovation—and doing so with confidence at scale.”

This partnership illustrates that additive manufacturing is no longer limited to prototyping or small-batch production but is increasingly viewed as a tool for series production of strategic components. By adopting large-format systems, Rocket Lab affirms its commitment to advanced manufacturing technologies aimed at making the development and production of future launch systems more efficient.
