Snapmaker has announced the introduction of a new, open software platform called Snapmaker Orca. This will replace the previously used Luban software and significantly improve the operation of the company’s modular 3-in-1 production machines. The introduction will take place gradually over the course of the year. The target group includes both beginners and experienced users in the fields of 3D printing, CNC milling and laser engraving.
Snapmaker Orca is being developed as a modern, open-source slicer that is specially adapted to the Snapmaker hardware. As the name suggests, the software is based on the open source slicer OrcaSlicer. The functions include pre-configured slicing profiles, optimized user guidance and the ability to switch seamlessly between the various editing modes. In particular, this should simplify the preparation of projects and improve machine utilization.
The software update is part of a longer-term strategy. Since its market launch with the first 3-in-1 machine, Snapmaker has continuously expanded its hardware range. The Snapmaker 2.0 series introduced modular extensions such as interchangeable tool heads, rotary axes and air filters. In 2022, the manufacturer introduced the Artisan series. Among other things, the current model series offers a build volume of 400 × 400 × 400 millimetres, linear guide rails in industrial quality and tool-free module changes.
The new software is designed to make better use of this hardware and deliver stable and reproducible results, even for more complex tasks. For applications such as dual extrusion printing, engraving with a 40-watt laser module or milling with 200-watt CNC components, Snapmaker promises a consistent user experience.
The software can be downloaded from the official website.
