In our first part, we looked at the 3D printing function of the Artisan from Snapmaker. In the second part of the review, we will test the two other main functions of the device: the laser cutter and the CNC function.

The conversion between the modules is very simple. Thanks to the modular design, only the tool head and the worktop need to be changed, after which handling is as usual. On start-up, the Artisan automatically recognizes the module change and updates the configuration. However, recalibration must be carried out manually. Fortunately, this process is straightforward and only takes a few minutes. Once the workpiece has been secured with the enclosed clamps, the process can be prepared.
As with 3D printing, the files are prepared using the in-house Snapmaker Luban software. Luban offers preset profiles and detailed setting options to suit both beginners and advanced users. Even without extensive prior knowledge, many relevant parameters can be adjusted thanks to the integrated tutorials. Depending on the project, an individual job can be put together that can then be started directly.
Snapmaker relies on a sophisticated combination of safety and performance for the laser module. The integrated fume hood provides efficient support during the entire laser process when removing harmful vapors. Our test showed that, in conjunction with the well-sealed housing, hardly any odors penetrate to the outside. The laser module also has a connection for a compressor that works together with the Smart Air Assist system. This blows soot and particles directly from the surface and thus protects the material from burn marks. This function showed a visible increase in quality in the test, particularly with engraved wood or leather surfaces.
Safety was also taken into consideration: the housing reliably absorbs the laser radiation. No direct light emission was observed during the entire machining process, which is an important factor for devices in this performance class. This is where the Artisan impresses in both the hobby and semi-professional sectors.
Snapmaker supplies three different milling bits with the CNC module so that the first projects can be realized immediately. Changing the router bits is straightforward. The so-called “Bit Assistant”, which gives precise instructions when changing tools, provides additional convenience. The workpiece is fixed to the worktop with four robust clamps before starting. In our test, all workpieces remained stable and did not slip, even under heavy loads.
The CNC jobs are started either via the interface directly on the device or via the Luban software. Both methods worked reliably and enabled precise control. During milling work, the housing effectively retains dust and material residues, which makes subsequent cleaning much easier. Even during intensive work, the view of the workpiece was maintained, as integrated lighting ensures sufficient brightness.
The clamps for the laser module revealed a minor weakness: While they work well with the 10-watt laser, they no longer fit perfectly with the more powerful 40-watt module, according to the operating instructions. Here, masking tape should be used as a fixing method. This solution is not ideal for a device in this price range and does not appear to have been well thought out. Although it does not affect the actual functionality, a more elegant alternative could have been expected. To summarize, the Snapmaker Artisan offers a solid and well thought-out performance in the laser and CNC area. Switching between modes is easy, and operation is comprehensible for both beginners and advanced users. Minor weaknesses, such as the compatibility of the clamps, only slightly dampen the positive overall impression. If you are looking for a versatile device for various production techniques and are prepared to accept minor limitations, the Artisan is a powerful solution for the workshop and hobby room.
