Snapmaker has introduced “Snapmaker Orca”, a new software based on the open source project OrcaSlicer. The software, which is specially tailored to Snapmaker machines, is currently in beta version V1.1.0 and offers improved compatibility and extended configuration options. In the future, the system will also support third-party devices.
The beta version provides initial insights into the extended functions. These include optimized default settings for printing, improved support for multi-extruder systems and simplified operation. The aim is to continuously develop the software further and meet the requirements of both Snapmaker users and the open source community.
Snapmaker has introduced a multi-phase development plan for the software. The earlier development phase focused on internal testing and basic integration with Snapmaker devices. Workflows for design, slicing and printing were optimized. The current stage of development is focused on improving print quality and expanding multi-extruder capabilities. At the same time, the user experience is being optimized.
In the next phase, extended functions for device connectivity and management will be introduced. Support for third-party hardware is also planned. Snapmaker has already shown with its entry-level software Luban and the firmware for the Snapmaker 2.0 models that collaboration with the open source community is an important part of the company’s strategy. Orca is now set to represent the next generation of software, building a bridge between proprietary and open systems.
