The Japanese mechanical engineering group Sodick Co., Ltd. has completed the full takeover of Prima Additive. The Italian company is thus officially leaving the Prima Industrie Group and will operate under the name “Prima Additive by Sodick” in future. This move strengthens Sodick’s position in the field of metal-based 3D printing and expands its portfolio of laser-based manufacturing technologies.
Prima Additive was launched as an independent brand within Prima Industrie in 2018, after initial research activities began in 2015 as part of the European Borealis project. Since then, the company has specialized in metal additive manufacturing, particularly in processes such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) and Direct Energy Deposition (DED). The offering is complemented by industrial laser applications such as remote laser welding for applications in electromobility and surface treatments for tools and components.
The acquisition will allow Prima Additive to scale up more quickly internationally. Synergies in product development and the complementary technical expertise of both companies will be utilized.
“Since Prima Additive was founded, we have been thinking about which direction to take, which technologies to focus on and how to position ourselves in the global market”, said Paolo Calefati, CEO of Prima Additive by Sodick. “In recent years, we have experienced significant growth in terms of product development and international expansion, strengthening our ambition to build highly industrial and automated advanced laser solutions. Sodick is the right partner to take on this challenge: with their industrial experience and strong support, we will continue to pursue bold goals in our core markets. A special thank you goes to Prima Industrie, which allowed us to reach this point and helped shape the mindset with which we faced the challenges of our journey. We are proud of our origins and look forward with enthusiasm to what lies ahead”.
Sodick, founded in 1976 and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange since 2004, is traditionally active in the field of electrical discharge machining and precision manufacturing. Since 2014, the company has been making targeted investments in additive manufacturing. By integrating Prima Additive, Sodick is further expanding its expertise in the field of metallic 3D printing systems and positioning itself more strongly in the market for industrial laser technologies.
