SP3D tests AI-supported 2D-to-3D platform for technical drawings

The French company SP3D – formerly Spare Parts 3D – is currently expanding the test operation of its AI-supported software platform THEIA. The aim is to automate the conversion of two-dimensional technical drawings into usable 3D models. Interested industrial companies can apply to use the platform as part of an early access program.

THEIA is aimed at industries that regularly work with technical drawings and increasingly rely on digital processes. The platform’s range of functions includes the automatic creation of STEP files for further processing in CAD programs, the determination of volume and weight data for logistics purposes and the creation of photorealistic models for applications in AR, VR or product marketing. It is operated via a browser-based user interface and requires no prior knowledge of CAD systems.

The underlying technology combines methods from the field of machine vision, neural networks and specially trained language models. The software was developed in collaboration with the Laboratoire Universitaire de Recherche en Production Automatisée (LURPA) at the École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay.

A central field of application for THEIA is the digitization of old inventories. Until now, many technical drawings in companies have only existed as 2D documents – often without associated CAD files. At the same time, there is an increasing lack of specialist personnel with experience in reading such plans. SP3D addresses this gap with an automated solution that bridges the gap between as-built documentation and modern production technology.

The current test phase is scheduled to run until July 2025. In the coming months, the platform will be expanded to include functions for interpreting more complex drawings, such as sectional views or isometric perspectives. Reconstruction from point cloud data is also on the roadmap.
