The Spanish 3D printing company BCN3D has filed for insolvency. According to consistent media reports, the company was unable to restructure its liabilities in negotiations with creditors. A commercial court in Barcelona then appointed the company GS Insolvency Management to monitor the proceedings. An investor is currently examining a takeover of the production division – a step that could at least partially preserve the company.
BCN3D was founded in 2012 as a project of the Technical University of Catalonia. The company is known for its IDEX (Independent Dual Extrusion) technology, in particular the Sigma and Epsilon model series. Most recently, the company presented the Omega I60, an industrial FFF printer for large-volume components. Despite technological advancements and over 10 million euros in financing as well as additional state subsidies amounting to 7 million euros, the company has not been able to increase its annual turnover beyond around 5 million euros. According to reports, the losses since the company was founded add up to around 10 million euros.
A former focus of innovation, VLM technology (Viscous Lithography Manufacturing), was spun off into a separate company called Supernova in 2023.
