Stratasys takes over materials business from Forward AM

Stratasys has acquired significant assets and operations of Forward AM Technologies GmbH. This marks the end of a lengthy transition process for the former materials specialist for industrial 3D printing. Forward AM, formerly known as BASF 3D Printing Solutions, specialized in filaments, powders and photopolymers and had established itself as a major supplier in additive manufacturing.

The takeover takes place against a backdrop of economic difficulties. In November 2024, Forward AM filed for insolvency in Heidelberg. The US branch was closed and sales for the American market have since been carried out directly from Germany. The brand will continue to operate as an independent unit within Stratasys under the name Mass Additive Manufacturing GmbH. This means that the existing material portfolio, which was previously developed for Stratasys and its competitors, will be retained.

With this step, Stratasys is significantly expanding its activities in the field of printing materials. The company had already acquired Covestro’s AM materials division in 2023. The integration of Forward AM strengthens strategic control over materials, an increasingly critical factor in the additive manufacturing environment. The combination of a stable machine base and growing parts output increases the relevance of materials as a revenue driver.

According to Stratasys, Forward AM will continue to operate independently and also supply customers across platforms. Technical support and the protection of sensitive project data will remain unchanged. This separation in particular is seen as crucial in the industry in order to maintain the trust of existing customers.
