In the Midwest region of the USA, Sustainable Concrete Innovations (SCI) has taken a significant step in the construction industry. The company is introducing 3D concrete printing technology for wall construction in Ohio, making the construction of homes and other buildings faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly. Although 3D concrete printing has been around for over a decade, states like Ohio are now beginning to actively utilize this technology. SCI is positioning itself as a pioneer in the Midwest construction industry.

SCI plans to partner with other builders to integrate 3D printed wall components into existing building systems. The goal is to use this technology to reduce construction costs and create affordable housing so that the American dream of homeownership remains within reach for more people.

John Smoll,  COO of SCI, explains: “If you need a certain number of housing units to meet demand, but you produce fewer, people will pay a premium. So, how do we bring costs down for everyone? We make sure the supply exceeds demand. That’s Economics 101.”

A major advantage of 3D concrete printing is the reduced labor and material costs. The technology enables a faster construction process with a smaller team and minimizes material waste through efficient moulds. In addition, the use of 3D printing contributes to sustainability, as fewer environmentally harmful materials are used and the construction process is almost climate-neutral. An example of efficiency is shown by a 1,300 square foot house that was completed in just eight days with a total printing time of twenty hours.

SCI has already realized “Project Zero”, a 1,600 square foot model home in Wapakoneta, Ohio, which offers prospective buyers a first-hand look at the possibilities of 3D printing. With the CyBe RC 3D printer from Dutch company CyBe Construction, SCI is relying on proven technology to further optimize production.
