TCT report shows potential and obstacles of 3D printing technology in the UK

The TCT Group has published its comprehensive report on the second TCT UK User Group 2024, which took place in Birmingham on June 4. The report summarizes the key findings from a day-long exchange of UK users of additive manufacturing technologies. As well as technical challenges, the report highlights the need for strategic support from government and machine manufacturers to fully exploit the potential of this emerging technology.

The meeting attracted a wide range of participants from UK industry, small and medium-sized enterprises and academia. Among those in attendance were leading engineers, researchers and representatives from major manufacturers. Discussions covered topics such as material technologies, economics, sustainability and the integration of additive manufacturing into existing production chains. A key concern was to strengthen collaboration within the industry in order to drive innovation.

Particular attention was paid to the difficulties associated with the repeatability and reliability of processes. Many participants called for more open cooperation with machine manufacturers in order to better adapt hardware and software to practical applications. Access to high-quality and sustainable materials also remains a challenge. The report highlights the call for a standardized categorization of materials based on user experience to increase trust in the products on offer.

Another topic was the shortage of skilled workers in additive manufacturing. It was suggested that educational initiatives and apprenticeship programs should be strengthened in order to attract young talent to the industry. Promoting access to modern manufacturing technology in schools and universities was also discussed as a priority measure.

The report concludes with an outlook for future meetings and emphasizes the importance of increased collaboration between industry, educational institutions and policy stakeholders. The next TCT UK User Group is scheduled for June 3, 2025 to continue the dialog on the future of additive manufacturing.
