Interview with Tim Hoogland
In an interview with 3Druck.com, TH3D Studio founder Tim Hoogland discusses the important role of the maker community in shaping the development of 3D printing and highlights the challenges faced by users. He also highlights how recent improvements in hardware and software have contributed to a more seamless 3D printing experience and shares his thoughts on the future of the technology.
What role do you believe the maker community plays in the advancement and development of 3D printing technology?
The maker community plays a crucial role in determining the next big trends in the 3D printing market. Our company’s success was significantly boosted by support from a dedicated Facebook group for Creality printers.
What are the main issues that 3D printing enthusiasts and professionals struggle with, both from your own experience and from working with customers?
The main issue people have is they jump in without fully understanding what they are doing with the machines. We know a lot of other vendors in the space and the common theme is that the majority of “issues” with products is due to customers not following directions and learning how to use the machines.
3D printing has developed continuously over the last few years. Which innovations or technological breakthroughs do you consider to be particularly important for a smoother 3D printing experience?
The key improvements we’ve observed are in the overall build quality of machines, which are now much more reliable compared to earlier models that were poorly constructed and prone to malfunctions. Additionally, advancements in software, particularly in slicer technology, have been instrumental in driving new features and enhancing print quality.
What impact do you think 3D printing will possibly have on society as a whole in the coming years?
I think in the next 5 to 10 years 3D printing will be commonplace in homes. I see more places repairing and maintaining machines becoming popular. The 3D printing industry really feels like the PC industry in the 80s and 90s when it started to become mainstream.
