Thai Cement Producer SCG Uses Delta WASP 3D Printer for Architectural Projects

Siam Cement Group (SCG) is a Thailand-based cement manufacturer that has recently unveiled a series of 3D printed projects including the Helix Family Cocoon, a small shelter mimicking the natural structure fused shells, and a 21st century cave.

Together with architect Pitupong Chaowakul of Supermachine Studio, their aim is to create the first 3D printed house in Asia. The architect’s approach is to try to add a new dynamic to conventional construction methods. Thus he created the Y-Box Pavilion – 21st century cave, staying away from the usual box shape of buildings and referring to the first human dwelling in caves. It is supposed to symbolise peace an safety in a distant place.

To be able to build his design he collaborated with Italian 3D printing company WASP. Their 4-meters-high custom 3D printer with a build volume of 2 x 2 x 2 meters is able to extrude thick materials including concrete produced by SCG.

WASP founder Massimo Moretti on the partnership with SCG: “We are very proud that a big Company like this belives in our work so much to come in Italy 4 times in a year, sharing its plans with us. They bridge the GAP of European organizations that are approaching to the 3D very slowly.”

3D printed in sections at the SCG factory, the pavilion was later assembled to be showcased. The company used a stone-like cement with high compressive strength properties achieved by incorporating binding agents and fibres.
