For the tenth anniversary of the 3D Pioneers Challenge (3DPC), founders Simone and Christoph Völcker are releasing a printed retrospective. The book is titled “Pushing Boundaries,” adopting the competition’s motto, and aims to document the development of 3D printing over a decade through concrete projects, context, and outlooks. The volume was published by avedition GmbH; it comprises 192 pages, includes more than 300 color images, and is listed at US$39 or €29.
The 3DPC itself is designed as an annual platform where students, startups, and companies present their work from design- and technology-driven environments. In recent years, a wide range of focuses has appeared there—from experimental concepts by well-known industrial designers to dental 3D printing and biomedical approaches. The book mirrors this breadth structurally by organizing its content into chapters along typical AM verticals, including MedTech, architecture, electronics, materials, machine development, and sustainability. Each section begins with contextual framing and adds perspectives from members of the 3DPC jury, outlining applications and hurdles in the respective field.
“A decade of innovation: from the first heart printed from stem cells to the first additively manufactured metal bridge, all the way to the jet suit that makes the dream of personal flight a reality,” the editors say. “For ten years, the international competition of the 3D Pioneers Challenge has accompanied some of the most exciting mile- stones in additive manufacturing and advanced technologies. This book shows how these technologies are transforming industries.”
In an editorial statement, the editors point to a range “from a heart printed from stem cells” to additively manufactured metal bridges and a jet suit that reinterprets personal mobility. The volume presents itself less as a product catalog and more as a curated overview of processes, materials, and process chains that span from prototyping to quality-assured manufacturing.
“Pushing Boundaries” was most recently presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair, where avedition showcased the title. For technically savvy readers, the book is especially interesting where it shows AM applications within their respective constraints: data preparation, material limits, certification, and the transition into robust production.
