Affordable All-Metal 3D Printer “Trinus” is a Huge Hit on Kickstarter – Update: Now Shipping

Starting March 30, San Francisco-based startup Kodama will launch the Trinus 3D printer on Kickstarter for $ 299, with a limited number of early bird offers available at $ 199.

March 29th 2016 – Trinus is an all-metal FFF 3D printer designed for everyday professional use, yet available at an affordable price. It therefore meets the needs of both professionals and hobbyists and can also be turned into a laser engraver within a minute just by changing the tool head of the machine. The developer team is currently working on designs for a dual extruder to mix multiple filaments, a paste extruder as well as a CNC router.

Industrial designer Bojan Smiljanic, who joined the startup last year, said: “I wanted to make a machine that I would use as a product designer. With its speed, precision, and versatility, Trinus fits the bill. The prototype printer in my office has been running 24/7 since November, with no technical failures yet.”

The printer is constructed entirely out of high-end aluminium and steel and can work with third party filaments, including PLA, ABS, flexible polycarbonate or other exotic filaments. It reaches a minimum layer height of 50 microns and a maximum speed of 150 mm/sec. According to Kodama, the simple modular design consisting of only 11 units, can be assembled by someone with no technical experience in half an hour. While Trinus comes with its own proprietary Pango software, it is compatible with any other software package or gCode.

Kodama has teamed up with electronics manufacturer Flextronics, filament developer Polymaker as well as 3D printing company Panowin to be able to deliver a high-quality product.

Technical specifications:

  • Print volume: 120mm x 125mm x 125mm
  • Print speed: up to 70 mm/sec | Moving speed: up to 150 mm/sec
  • Minimum layer height: 0.05mm
  • Print material: 1.75mm PLA, ABS, PC, flex, wood, aluminum
  • OS supported: Windows, Mac
  • Connectivity: USB, SD Card (autoprint)
  • Power consumption: 60W
  • Weight: 9.8 kg
