The latest version of the popular Ultimaker Cura slicer, version 5.9, has been released and brings numerous improvements and features designed to optimize the printing experience. Highlights include new methods for designing Z-seams, enhanced material and printer profiles, and G-code improvements that enable advanced automation.
One of the most exciting new features is the introduction of scarf seams. Inspired by joints in woodworking, this feature allows for smoother transitions at the beginning and end of print layers. The material flow is adjusted gradually, resulting in visibly smoother results. Users can customize the length and gradation of the scarf seams to achieve optimal results. In addition, the algorithms for aligning Z-seams have been revised, especially for sharp edges, which further increases precision.
Ultimaker Cura 5.9 also offers new printer and material profiles. The slicer now supports the MakerBot Sketch Sprint, a high-speed printer, as well as updated profiles for materials such as ABS, PETG and Tough PLA. These additions offer users more options for realizing a wide variety of projects. At the same time, compatibility with Ultimaker printers has been further improved and the software is now more responsive when making extensive adjustments to print settings.
The ability to insert conditional instructions into the start and end G-code opens up new possibilities for automated workflows. This allows printing processes to be made more efficient by dynamically adapting to printing conditions or user input. Another practical innovation is the additional support for thin infill lines. These stabilize the first cover layers at low infill rates and prevent unsightly defects such as cracks or bubbles.
User-friendliness has also been further optimized in Cura 5.9. Minor adjustments such as an improved display of windows and larger close buttons make operation easier. With these updates, Ultimaker Cura consolidates its position as an indispensable slicer for precise and versatile 3D printing projects. The new version is now available for download on the official website.
