The Magdeburg-based bicycle manufacturer Urwahn Engineering GmbH is presenting a new series of urban and gravel e-bikes that are manufactured using 3D printing technology. The company, which describes itself as the global market leader in metallurgical 3D printing, uses the Laser Powder Bed Fusion process to produce ultra-light steel frames.
The new ‘SOFTRIDE 2.0’ frame platform promises technological advances in e-bike production. Sebastian Meinecke, founder and CEO of Urwahn Bikes, explains: ‘Our research and development team has developed a highly customisable portfolio that sets new standards in terms of appearance, technology and sustainability.’
The 3D-printed steel frame resembles modern carbon frames in its monocoque construction and reaches the weight level of aluminium frames. The special geometry with elastic chassis was optimised in collaboration with 3D printing specialists such as TRUMPF. The frame is available in three sizes and is suitable for body heights from 164 to 194 cm.
Urwahn relies on the X20 rear hub motor from MAHLE Smartbike Systems for its e-bikes. Weighing just 1.4 kg, it is the lightest rear motor available on the market. The system, consisting of motor, battery and control unit, weighs a total of 3.2 kg. The 236 watt-hour battery is inconspicuously integrated into the down tube and enables a range of up to 100 kilometres.
The bikes can be optionally equipped with a PINION Smart.Shift C1.9i or C1.12i bottom bracket gearbox, which offers a gear ratio range of 568 to 600 %. The electric shifting takes place at the touch of a button and can be extended by a Smart Assistant.
Urwahn emphasises local production and follows the FAIRFRAME manifesto. Production is on-demand and takes place within 45 days. The company pursues a closed product life cycle by repairing, refurbishing and recycling used frames.
3D printing technology enables Urwahn to produce flexibly and individually. Each bike is made to customer specifications, with a wide range of customisation options available, including different colours, add-on parts and accessories.
