USA invests in sustainable and high-performance additive manufacturing

America Makes and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) recently announced the winners of a $2.1 million project grant. The solicitation, initiated by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, aims to address key challenges and areas of innovation in additive manufacturing (AM). The projects, which are divided into six subject areas, are intended to strengthen the competitiveness of the US manufacturing industry.

One focus of the projects is on the qualification of materials and processes that have so far been an obstacle to the further development of AM technology. The aim is to develop precise data and prediction models that optimize manufacturing processes and improve the quality, efficiency and performance of components. In particular, complex and safety-critical components, for example for the aerospace industry, are the focus of research.

In addition, two projects address sustainability in additive manufacturing. They are investigating how materials can be recycled and reused without compromising the strict requirements for component quality and performance. The aim is to develop sustainable design approaches and materials that conserve resources in the long term and reduce the industry’s ecological footprint.

“We are honored to convene some of the brightest minds in the industry, who continually provide innovative solutions that position additive technology as the future of manufacturing,” stated Dr. Brandon Ribic, Technology Director at America Makes. “We are confident in their ability to tackle the qualification challenges essential for driving growth in the industry.”

The selection of project teams underscores the breadth and depth of expertise in the industry. From analyzing residual stresses in laser powder bed processes to developing sustainable manufacturing strategies, the teams are contributing to the advancement of additive manufacturing. The investment is a step towards strengthening the role of AM technology in an increasingly digitalized and sustainable manufacturing landscape.
