WEBER additive announces its participation in EmpowerAX, a European research network in the 3D printing sector. The network, led by DLR, aims to further develop additive manufacturing, especially in the field of fiber-reinforced materials.
As part of EmpowerAX projects, WEBER additive has made significant contributions, including the precise printing of high-performance thermoplastics on curved carbon fiber/epoxy shells.
The project aimed to create a demonstrator that optimizes the mechanical properties of composite materials by combining different fibers and plastics. The basis was a carbon fiber shell reinforced by PEI stiffening ribs applied using a DXR system. Topology optimization and performance analyses played an important role in the design in order to reduce weight and maximize the strength of the component.
The success of the project lies in the precise execution and the combination of materials science and manufacturing technology. WEBER additive demonstrated the possibilities of 3D printing for complex applications. The result, a functional shell demonstrator, will be presented at Formnext 2023.
