YouTuber Robert Murray-Smith has developed a novel 3D printing-based system that improves the efficiency of dual-rotor wind turbines. He uses a differential gearbox to combine the different speeds of the two rotors.
Dual-rotor wind turbines can extract more energy from the wind than conventional single rotors. However, the energy extraction from the second rotor leads to power losses. Murray-Smith has now found an approach to solve this challenge.
The system consists of two counter-rotating rotors that are connected to each other via a differential gearbox. This compensates for the different rotational speeds and thus enables more efficient energy generation.
