Maker VogMan has released a working 1:56 scale miniature catapult designed specifically for tabletop and diorama enthusiasts. The 3D model is modular, contains movable components and is available as a free download on Thingiverse. An extended premium version with additional details is available via Cults3D.
VogMan has optimized the design for FDM printers and designed it in such a way that users can largely do without support structures. He printed the model with PLA+ on an Elegoo Centauri Carbon. Most parts require between 50 and 100 percent infill, while additional support structures or reduced printing speeds are useful for delicate elements.
The mechanical components include a functioning release mechanism, a rotating winch mechanism for tensioning the throwing arm and a movable counterweight. The energy for throwing is generated by a hanging weight, as in real-life models.
For advanced users, the paid version offers additional design elements such as a longer throwing arm module, interchangeable end pieces to adjust the throwing angle and decorative wheels. A stylized projectile turret and various types of ammunition are also part of the extended equipment.
The model is not only suitable for decorative use in the hobby sector, but also as a demonstrator of simple mechanical principles.
