A new open source project makes it possible to 3D print a self-locking differential gearbox that was previously used in Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Lancia vehicles. The design comes from YouTuber Robert Murray-Smith and can be created using simple basic CAD shapes in Tinkercad.
The self-locking differential gear differs from the usual bevel gear differential in that it is made up of spur gears. The design consists of two sun gears and six planet gears, which are arranged in opposite directions. A drive bevel gear transmits the power to the differential basket.
The special feature of the design lies in its simple construction. All components are based on basic geometric shapes and can be replicated without complex CAD knowledge. The planetary gears distribute the load evenly and ensure smooth operation.
Assembly takes place in stages. First, the large drive bevel gear is attached to the differential cage. The planetary gears are then inserted, followed by the sun gears with their spacers. Clip connections secure the assembly in the frame.
The finished differential demonstrates the basic principle of power distribution. If one output is braked, the other can continue to rotate. This function is particularly important when cornering, as the wheels have to turn at different speeds.
The 3D print files are available free of charge on Thingiverse.
