zone3Dplus – on-demand manufacturing services with a practical instant quota system put to the test

zone3Dplus, a provider of on-demand manufacturing services based in China, specializes in additive manufacturing and small batch production. Promising to deliver professional and fast manufacturing solutions at an attractive price, the company relies on a user-friendly online ordering system that makes it easy for customers to access a variety of industrial services. We tested the service.

Shanghai-based zone3Dplus boasts an impressive network of over 100 industrial printers (according to its own information) and offers more than 30 different metal and plastic materials. Despite strict quality controls to ensure that every part produced meets the highest standards, zone3Dplus relies on fast production and delivery to meet the expectations of its customers worldwide.

Versatile range of services for individual requirements

Additive manufacturing:

zone3Dplus uses a wide range of state-of-the-art 3D printing technologies such as SLM, SLA, SLS, MJF, Polyjet and Binder Jetting. Customers benefit from a choice of over 30 metal and plastic materials without being tied to minimum order quantities. This makes the service attractive for the production of high-quality prototypes and functional components – regardless of the size of the order.

CNC machining:

For precise metal and plastic machining, the company offers CNC milling, turning and wire EDM solutions. With over 50 machines, zone3Dplus promises maximum efficiency and precision in the production of small batches, with a focus on flexibility and quality.

Vacuum casting:

Cost-effective vacuum casting solutions are another offering from zone3Dplus. Customers can work with materials such as ABS, PC, PP, nylon, PMMA, POM and PU, with production starting from just one piece.

Small series production:

For production runs between 50 and over 1,000 units, the company offers customized manufacturing solutions.

With this comprehensive service portfolio, combined with a user-friendly ordering system and fast delivery times, zone3Dplus is positioning itself as an interesting partner for companies that rely on individual and high-quality manufacturing solutions.

Our test

We became aware of the zone3Dplus service primarily due to the uncomplicated “Instant Quote” functionality. This makes it possible to upload a 3D model file without prior registration and immediately view a wide range of production options with industrial materials and finishing processes. Particularly attractive: the costs are immediately displayed transparently, which makes the decision-making process much easier. To test whether the offer is also convincing in practice, we quickly ordered a topology-optimized component in four common processes – and were not disappointed.

Test order: Topology-optimized component in practical use

For our test, we opted for the “Topology Optimized Side Bracket” from Timmy Moser. The component, measuring 2.8 x 13.8 x 15.8 cm, was created using Fusion360 and is ideal for evaluating the performance of different manufacturing processes and materials.

We selected the three common processes SLA (stereolithography), SLS (selective laser sintering) and SLM (selective laser melting) and ordered the model in four different materials. The selected processes each represent typical areas of application for 3D printing: SLA for high-precision prototypes, SLS for robust and flexible plastic parts and SLM for high-strength metal components.

Details of the test order

Materials and post-processing:

We ordered the same model in different materials and opted for free post-processing options to put the finishing touches on the surfaces:

MaterialProcessPost-ProcessingCost (USD)
Aluminium Alloy (AlSi10Mg)SLMSandblasting$104.74
Nylon 12SLSSandblasting$22.03
Standard White ResinSLASanding$16.00
Black ResinSLASanding$21.50

Production times according to supplier:

  • Aluminum Alloy (SLM): 4-6 business days
  • Nylon 12 (SLS): 3-5 working days
  • Standard White Resin (SLA): 2-3 working days
  • Black Resin (SLA): 2-3 working days

Results and impressions

The simple and clear user interface of zone3Dplus already made a positive impression on us during order processing. The instant quote system immediately displayed the production options and prices for each process and material. Particularly commendable: post-processing options such as smoothing or painting could also be added directly, with pricing adjusted in real time.

The ordered parts were delivered surprisingly quickly. After just nine days (equivalent to seven working days), we received a compact package containing all the models we had ordered. The quality of the printed parts met our expectations in every respect:

SLA: The SLA model, printed in standard white resin and black resin, impressed with its exceptional precision and smooth, high-quality surface finish. It is ideal for design testing and presentation purposes.

SLS: The SLS model made of nylon 12 demonstrated impressive resilience. The matt, slightly rough surface conveys a robust, industrial character and is ideal for functional tests.

SLM: The SLM model made of aluminum alloy (AlSi10Mg) shone with its stability and dimensional accuracy and is perfectly suited for applications that have to withstand mechanical loads.

Delivered parts:

After unpacking, we were able to weigh and check the finished parts. The weight and quality of the objects met our expectations:

MaterialProcessWeight (g)
Aluminium Alloy (AlSi10Mg)SLM188 g
Nylon 12SLS61 g
Standard White ResinSLA79 g
Black ResinSLA82 g

Our conclusion:

zone3Dplus offers customized solutions for a wide range of industries. Thanks to its wide range of materials and technologies and strict quality controls, the company enables the efficient and cost-effective implementation of product ideas.

However, it is important to carefully consider individual costs. Shipping fees, which can vary depending on order volume and location, as well as potential import taxes should be taken into account when calculating. These factors can also affect the actual delivery time. For particularly critical applications, it may be necessary to carry out additional quality tests before using the manufactured parts.

Apart from these aspects, the zone3Dplus offer is convincing across the board. The delivered objects impress with precise processing, high material quality and dimensional accuracy. The post-processing options offered, such as sandblasting for metal and nylon parts and sanding for resin models, give the products a professional finish.

The overall package – consisting of easy ordering, transparent pricing, short production times and convincing quality – positions zone3Dplus as a highly competitive and reliable provider of 3D printing and on-demand manufacturing services.
