Zoo realized with text-to-CAD tool: Create CAD models via text input

The start-up Zoo has presented a public alpha version of its AI-supported tool “Text-to-CAD”. Users can create CAD models by entering simple text commands. The software is particularly aimed at developers and engineers who want to speed up their design processes. Technically, Text-to-CAD is based on an interface to the machine learning platform “ML-ephant”.

Until now, manual modeling in tools such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360 has been part of everyday CAD design. Text-to-CAD takes a new approach. Instead of building a model step by step, the user simply describes the desired object in text form. An example could be: “Cuboid, 10 inches long, 4 inches wide and 2 inches high with beveled edges.” The tool automatically generates a 3D model from this, which can be further processed directly or downloaded as an STL or STEP file.

Zoo uses a self-developed machine learning infrastructure called “ML-ephant” to generate the model. According to the company, input is processed via an API that converts models directly into CAD-compatible file formats such as STEP or STL. The user initially receives 40 minutes of free API usage per month. In addition, there is a charge of 0.50 US dollars per minute.

The company is specifically addressing two user groups with Text-to-CAD: On the one hand, developers who want to integrate this API into their own applications. On the other hand, designers or engineers who only use the interface without integrating the service itself. There is also a Text-to-CAD add-on for Blender.
