Only a few years ago Zortrax was founded. Shortly afterwards they had a successful Kickstarter campaign for their first 3D printers. Last year they published their M200 3D printer which got really popular. One of the best things about the M200 is the self-levelling for the print bed and now they have patented the technology that was used in the M200 3D printer.
Last year (2015) Zortrax has tripled its sales and they have already sold over 5,000 M200 3D printers. Now they thought about protecting their company for the future and the first step therefore is a patent. With a patent the used technique for the automated bed levelling will be protected and other companies are not allowed to use this technique.
The biggest advantage of the invention patented by Zortrax is the ability to very accurately calibrate the working of printers, this also reduces the risk of tearing the print platform. The patented system is already used in the M200 series of 3D printers and will also be implemented in future models of 3D printers, Zortrax is working on.
With the patent Zortrax has protected this technique for the future. It is already used in every M200 3D printer and works there very fine. A self leveling bed seems to become more and more a standard in 3D printing. If you have ever spent a lot of time to level your printing bed you will know how usefull a self leveling bed could be.
