Bakrie & Brothers brings 3D printing for house construction to Indonesia

Indonesian conglomerate Bakrie & Brothers (BNBR) recently introduced 3D printing technology for home construction in the country. With the founding of the subsidiary Modula Tiga Dimensi, the aim is to become a pioneer in the field of 3D construction printing.

“Through Modula, we are pioneers of 3D printing in the Indonesian construction sector,” explained BNBR CFO Roy Hendrajanto Sakti at the presentation in Bekasi. The environmentally friendly technology underlines the Group’s commitment to the national climate targets.

Modula uses the BOD3 3D printer from the Danish company COBOD International. According to the company’s Head of Asia Pacific Simon Klint Bergh, the process automates and speeds up the construction process considerably compared to conventional methods.

The construction time for single-family homes can be reduced by 50 percent. The need for manpower is reduced by around a third and there is 20 percent less material wastage than is usual in the industry. In addition, the precise, flexible technology allows almost unlimited design freedom.

According to Bakrie, all of this could help to tackle the housing shortage in Indonesia. Estimates put the annual need for new construction at up to 800,000 units, while only 500,000 houses are currently being completed.

Modula Tiga Dimensi was created as a joint venture between Bakrie & Brothers and COBOD. The premiere of 3D construction printing in Indonesia is part of the conglomerate’s efforts for a sustainable future, alongside initiatives such as electromobility and renewable energies.
