3D-printed dress impresses at Miss Universe

A futuristic dress, which was largely produced using 3D printing, caused a stir at the Miss Universe 2023 competition. The azure blue evening gown with glittering Swarovski stones was created by South African fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee.

Over 530 hours of work went into the design, which was used for the final round of the reigning Miss Universe, R’Bonney Gabriel. According to Coetzee, the dress symbolizes strength and femininity as well as an outlook into a future shaped by women.

The fashion designer calls himself a “dress architect”. His designs have already been seen at events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the premiere of the Disney film “Arielle”.

With the 3D-printed dress for Miss Universe, Coetzee underlines the technical progress in the fashion industry. The combination of haute couture and digital production could shape the future of exclusive design.
