3D Printing Opens Up New Possibilities for Vintage Car Restauration

Lenore Edman, founder of EvilMadScientist.com, describes on her blog how the 3D printing technology enabled her father to replicate a side view mirror for his 1934 Dodge pickup truck.

When this truck was manufactured 80 years ago, it was not common to install mirrors on the car’s passenger side. As it is a required safety feature for totay’s vehicles, Lenore’s father was in need of a replica of such a mirror for his dodge. The 3D Scanning technology allowed him to create a digital file of the existing mirror on the driver’s side. The CAD file was then edited and 3D printed. In order to get the exact same look as the existing mirror, it was sand casted and painted black.
