
The Night Crew Labs were founded by Bryan Chan, Ashish Goel, Tyler Reid, Corey Snyder and Paul Tarantino with the goal to film the northern lights from a high altitude balloon in Alaska.
To test their design of the moving platform, which houses the cameras and other equipment like a GPS sensor used to recover the flight data and find the landing spot, the team decided to make a test flight in San Francisco. With amazing results!
To house all the needed equipment the team decided to design a custom case. This case was 3D printed using Stratasys services and holds the light sensitive Sony A7s (the main camera), a GoPro for additional footage, batteries, a Samsung smartphone for GPS tracking and an external recorder for the video footage from Atomos.
